Privacy Policy — StepDeck Studio

Overview

StepDeck Studio is a Chrome extension that helps you capture browser-based workflows into step-by-step documentation with screenshots and notes.

Default principle: your captured content stays on your device.

What We Collect

StepDeck Studio is designed to operate locally on your device. Capture, editing, and export functions run within your browser.

Assist (Free Version)
The Assist version does not transmit screenshots, captured steps, documentation content, exports, or browsing history to external servers.

PRO Version (License Status Validation Only)
StepDeck Studio PRO performs a secure API request to validate license status. This validation confirms entitlement only and does not transmit screenshots, captured steps, notes, documentation content, exports, or browsing history.

Data transmitted for license validation may include:

  • License key or purchase email
  • Extension version
  • A locally generated anonymous device identifier

This information is used solely to confirm PRO entitlement. No usage analytics, behavioral tracking, or documentation content are transmitted.

We do not sell or share personal information. For a technical overview, see our Privacy Architecture page.

What We Do Not Collect

  • No telemetry
  • No browsing activity monitoring
  • No selling of user data

Data Storage

All session data is stored locally on your device (e.g. in Chrome storage).

PRO autosave writes session and screenshot data to a local folder you choose; no copy is sent to our servers or third parties.

We do not store your documentation, captures, or exports in the cloud.

What Is Stored Locally On Your Device

The extension stores the following locally to function:

  • Capture session metadata (steps, timestamps, titles)
  • User-entered notes (rich text)
  • Local settings (capture mode, UI preferences)
  • License state (Assist/PRO status)
  • A locally generated device identifier (used for PRO license validation only)

This data remains on your device unless you export or delete it.

Exports and Files

When you export (or PRO autosaves), StepDeck Studio writes files to your computer using Chrome's download mechanism, such as:

  • RTF exports (Assist)
  • PDF/DOCX exports (PRO)
  • ZIP autosave packages (PRO)

These files are stored wherever your browser downloads are saved (or where you choose).

PRO Licensing (Network Access)

StepDeck Studio PRO performs a secure API request to validate license status. This is the only external network communication performed by the extension.

License validation confirms entitlement only. The following data may be transmitted for validation purposes:

  • License key or purchase email
  • Extension version
  • Anonymous device identifier generated locally

The following data is never transmitted during license validation:

  • Captured screenshots
  • Captured steps or session data
  • Documentation content or notes
  • Exports (RTF, PDF, DOCX, ZIP)
  • Browsing history

If the licensing service is unavailable, the extension continues operating in Assist mode using locally stored license state.

Third-Party Services

License validation: PRO entitlement is verified through our licensing API (https://license.stepdeckstudio.com). Only validation-related data required for entitlement checks is transmitted. No documentation content, screenshots, session data, or exports are shared with this service.

Payments: Subscription payments are processed by Stripe. Payment information (including card and billing data) is handled directly by Stripe in accordance with Stripe’s privacy policy. StepDeck Studio does not store full payment credentials.

We do not use analytics platforms, advertising networks, tracking pixels, or remote content processing for captures or exports.

Permissions (Why They Exist)

StepDeck Studio requests only the permissions required to function:

  • activeTab / scripting / tabs: inject capture UI and interact with the active tab during recording
  • downloads: export guides and autosave ZIPs locally
  • storage: save session state and settings locally
  • sidePanel: provide the review/control panel while you capture
  • offscreen: generate PDF/DOCX exports and annotate screenshots locally (canvas-based)

Children's Privacy

StepDeck Studio is not designed to collect information from children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
